About Stephen Byers

I am a registered patent attorney and the principal attorney of an intellectual property/business law firm. For over 15 years I have represented entities of all sizes -- from Fortune 50 titans to individuals -- in their litigation and transactional matters. Previous career experiences include eight years as an intellectual property attorney at a national law firm and in-house General Counsel at a tech startup. More descriptively, I'm an IP attorney with a corporate generalist bent. I draft and negotiate a wide variety of contracts/agreements and advise on other business matters (HR, regulatory compliance, advertising, etc.), but I specialize in creating, protecting, and monetizing an entity's comprehensive intellectual property portfolio (including copyrights, patents, trademarks, and trade secrets). I draft and prosecute patent and trademark applications, develop portfolios, negotiate licenses and sales, provide infringement/validity opinions, and litigate (before both courts and Boards) when necessary -- all with a focus on what makes business sense and is keeping with the entity's mission statement and goals. For some clients, I act as outside general counsel, overseeing all legal issues that concern the entity, proactively mitigating risks, selecting other outside counsel, and providing other business solutions where appropriate. For these clients I also review legal budgets and bills, and manage, coordinate, and support other counsel.
