Scott Alter

Scott is an internationally known intellectual property attorney whose practice focuses on obtaining practical results for clients in the areas of software, electronics, telecommunications, cloud computing, medical device, financial, internet and semiconductor technologies. Software-related patent issues are a major component of his practice, and commensurate with this experience, he has significant expertise in areas of the law that include patent eligibility, joint and indirect infringement, and indefiniteness. Representative client matters include: • Developing and implementing IP strategies for protecting high-value assets • Risk assessment and design-around analyses • Clearance and freedom-to-operate studies • Defensive readiness and in-depth portfolio integrity analyses • Rendering non-infringement and invalidity opinions • Strategic development of world-wide patent portfolios • Managing and assisting with complex patent prosecution including appeals, reexaminations and inter partes reviews. Scott has spoken at numerous conferences and written many articles on patent eligibility and indirect/joint infringement concerning software-related technologies. He is a Co-Chair of the National CLE Conference in Vail, CO, and a Co-Chair of PLI’s Patent Law Institute in New York City and San Francisco.
