I did not choose to Family Law, Family Law chose me. Here’s the story: I was a partner at Shipman Goodwin in the corporate law department when I found myself in family court one day. My client - wealthy with extensive business interests, good guy, too - was in the middle of a divorce. I was there to talk about the businesses and how they related to the marital property and the effect the divorce might have on those companies. Some issues popped up, as they almost always do in divorces. My client’s divorce attorney had no business background and was just at sea with the whole thing. With not so subtle hints, the judge Had me step in to work out an agreement opposing counsel. After the case recessed for the day the judge and opposing attorney thanked me and asked if I’d consider stepping in and ‘finish it up.’ “You love this and it shows… help this guy,’ was the reframe. The client agreed and that’s how I started my first family law case – smack in the middle, as it were. The matter was settled in two weeks. The judge was pleased, opposing counsel was pleased, the client was ecstatic, and I was hooked. Completely. It wasn’t long before I made the leap, left my partnership, and went out on my own. I’ve never looked back. Why was I hooked? Many reasons, but they all start with this - I likes people. More specifically I love to talk to people. Ever tried talking to a corporation? They don’t have a lot to say. They also don’t express happiness and relief when their matters are finalized and they are set to restart their lives. I moved to family law for the relationships; to “help people through one of if not the most challenging times of their lives.” For me it’s all about injecting optimism into a process that is all too often awash in cynicism. It’s offering a dignified path to a new life with “as minimal suffering and perceived anguish as possible“ along the way. I believe in working in teams. My colleagues and friends not so jokingly call me ‘I got a guy Rochlin.’ Need a therapist? Forensic accountant? Business valuation expert? Plumber? I got a guy.
