About Richard Lara

A passion for justice has guided my education and career. While earning BA and MA degrees in philosophy and history, I thought deeply about ethics, political philosophy and history. In my doctoral dissertation, I argued that the highest use of human reason involves creating laws, in response to changing life conditions, as a means of caring for and cultivating life. I also argued that there are three integrally related modes of human reason – i.e., productive, skeptical, and creative reason – that enable us to create values that we use to fashion ever more just and beautiful forms of life. While defending my dissertation, I noticed that these three modes of reason correspond to our three branches of government, and this piqued my interest in law. I entered law school after teaching logic and philosophy at the college level. The success of my first real-world legal writing assignment, which came during a summer externship at the DA’s Office, proved the usefulness of my philosophical training. I wrote an opposition to a motion to quash the DA’s subpoena duces tecum on which the judge ruled favorably - even after judges in the district had repeatedly ruled against the DA on the same issue. In my third year, and after taking just one class on international law, I wrote an article titled “The Problem of Sovereignty, International Law, and Intellectual Conscience” that was published in a prominent law journal. In that article, I offered a viable alternative to the very important yet problematic traditional concept of states’ sovereignty, which often frustrates international efforts to protect human rights. Today, my passion for justice takes the form of defending the rights of my clients. I believe that a nation serves its citizens best when it diligently protects their rights and that attorneys play a crucial role in providing such protection. Thus, I am very honored to be a part of our nation’s legal profession.
