When I was five, my mom marveled at my precocious passion for Lincoln Logs and Tinker Toys. When I was seven, I upgraded to an Erector Set, so I could build more complex structures. At twelve, I got a paper route to buy models that stretched taller than I could reach. I’ve been building my construction industry resume since kindergarten. As I grew, I realized that I didn’t have the design flair of the great architects or an engineers’ knack for calculus, but I can look at a detailed blueprint and visualize a walk-through in three dimensions. I love the infinite complexity of mega-resort and hospitality projects, the tens of thousands of interconnected practical and design elements that need to flow seamlessly together as a tower slowly rises from the dirt. Ultimately, I liked standing back and looking at a 1,000-foot tower or sprawling multi-use project and know I played a small part in its completion. I often work on projects with millions of square feet of space. With their massive scale, small mistakes get magnified, leading to disaster. I remind my clients, “Five minutes can save $5 million.” (Or $50 million, in larger projects.) I teach them how and when to spend those precious minutes to ensure that a contractor doesn’t slip something past them in a friendly email that could bite them hard in arbitration or court two years later. There are few small mistakes in large projects―one subcontractor who reversed the lapping on a window seal may repeat that mistake thousands of times over hundreds of units, so a leaky window turns into a multi-building water-infiltration disaster in the first storm. For our Owner clients it’s about working together with the entire construction group―while building a tight internal team to control the process and achieve the best result most cost-effectively. But mistakes are inevitable; deadlines are missed, fees are miscalculated or overcharged. Delays mean dollars, and we help ensure that our clients get the maximum protection.
