About Paul Castillo
Sharing Knowledge. Building Justice. I lead the Legal Education & Public Engagement team at Lambda Legal, the nation's oldest and largest legal organization advancing the civil rights of LGBTQ+ people and everyone living with HIV. In this role, I oversee an integrated team that connects litigation, public education, and pro bono partnerships to turn legal wins into lived freedom. Since joining Lambda Legal in 2013, I've helped shape some of our most significant cases including serving on the Obergefell v. Hodges legal team that secured the freedom to marry nationwide and leading Zzyym v. Pompeo, which resulted in the first U.S. passport with an X gender marker. My work has also challenged laws targeting transgender youth, restricting gender-affirming care, and discriminating against LGBTQ+ students in schools. Today, I direct national initiatives that reach thousands of people each year through our Help Desk, pro bono network, and Know Your Rights campaigns. By expanding legal education and strengthening attorney engagement, we equip individuals and communities with the tools and support they need to confront discrimination, assert their rights, and live openly and authentically. At its core, my work is about creating systems that are accessible, replicable, and built to last — ensuring that every inquiry, partnership, and legal resource moves justice from the courtroom into people's lives. When people turn to Lambda Legal, they should find not only help, but hope. Justice may buffer, but it always loads.
