About Michael Elvin
I am a partner at Barack Ferrazzano in Chicago, where I have spent more than 35 years representing clients in complex commercial litigation, arbitration, and transactional matters across multiple jurisdictions. My practice covers a broad range of commercial disputes and advisory work. In the real estate sector, I represent both publicly traded and privately held clients in commercial mortgage foreclosure defense, CMBS loan and collateral matters, landlord-tenant disputes and litigation, receivership proceedings, deeds in lieu of foreclosure, and strategic counseling on loan documents and alleged defaults. I also handle complex commercial litigation for clients in the medical device, automotive, wireless communications, oil, and manufacturing industries, involving commercial and business disputes, employment matters, product liability, intellectual property and royalty licensing, and appellate work. Beyond litigation, I serve as outside general counsel and strategic adviser to clients across industries, helping them manage risk, avoid disputes, and navigate high-stakes decisions.Representative experience includes serving as lead trial counsel in Petroleum Traders Corp. v. Baltimore County (D. Md.) — a UCC breach of contract action in which the jury returned a verdict exceeding $750,000, including the full damages sought, lost profits, and prejudgment interest. I have represented a global medical device manufacturer in multi-week arbitrations involving nine-figure royalty claims, prevailing on all counts, and have served recently as lead counsel for a real estate loan guarantor in a federal declaratory judgment action with more than $200 million at issue.Earlier in my career, I served in the Illinois state government under Governor Edgar, including as Director of Enforcement at the Department of Professional Regulation, directing more than 100 investigators and attorneys. I am admitted in Illinois and Indiana, and before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana and the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Fourth, Seventh, and Ninth Circuits. I hold a J.D. (cum laude) from Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law and a B.S.B.A. (magna cum laude) from Bucknell University.
