About Matthew Nelson
I help people, businesses, governments, and non-profits resolve disputes, generally through litigation. I am an appellate attorney and have argued more than 100 appellate cases including in the U.S. Supreme Court; the Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Circuits, and appellate courts of various states. My career highlights include prevailing on the merits twice in the U.S. Supreme Court, obtaining a published decisions rejecting various abusive class action tactics, and serving as the chair of the DRI Center for Law and Public Policy's national amicus committee. My practice includes representing defendants in class actions, addressing constitutional issues including under the Religion Clauses to the First Amendment and the Takings Clause, and assisting governments and government officials in high profile disputes. Most recently, I have been representing numerous counties and county officials in class actions involving takings claims arising from tax foreclosures after the Supreme Court's decision in Tyler v.
