I'll be honest, when I first decided to go to law school, I didn’t envision that being a lawyer would be my end game – let alone becoming the president of a law firm. It wasn’t until I got involved in my family's legacy, that I found my true calling... You see, my Grandfather was a long-time president of Local 27 of the United Food & Commercial Workers Union. He was one of the first (if not the first) in the country to negotiate fringe benefits for union members. One of the benefits he negotiated was prepaid legal – which was a benefit that no one had ever had before. Fast forward a bit, and my father founded Akman & Associates in 1981 where he bid for (and won) the Local 27 pre-paid legal contract. Up until his passing in 2011, he continued to expand on my grandfather’s work by building up the pre-paid legal side of the firm and offering affordable legal coverage to people who otherwise might not have fair representation. The rest is really history. Akman & Associates is now a full-service law firm that represents over 35,000 members and provides legal services to individuals across MD, PA, VA, DC, and many other areas.
