About Mark Ufkes

My entire career has emphasized a social and community service orientation. I have been blessed to work, study, and explore over 30 countries, over 50 Indian reservations, and effectively work with folks from over 100 cultures world-wide. My entire career (and life focus) has been on building individual and organizational capacity, with an emphasis on effective management and budget development processes. I have a knack for keeping the administrative boat steady when the waves of crisis are crashing all around, and I have been called an effective mentor many, many times from those who I have had the pleasure to work with. I have always pushed those I manage to reach a higher level of professionalism while emphasizing a collaborative internal management structure. As it relates to Indian Country, I emphasize Tribal member employment and training as an essential priority. Additionally, I have also been blessed with unusually well developed strategic insight, supporting decision makers to reach a higher level of service. Often, this involves pushing leadership towards opportunities and goals that others have not yet identified. These strengths require a solid ability to build personal and institutional relationships that expand collaboration and create new contract and service partnerships. As a result of my professional, respectful, and optimistic approach, grant and program development teams that I have been a part of, have generated well over $80 million in services/contracts from such diverse entities as the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, several US government entities, the Gates Foundation and dozens of other public/private sector entities. Most of all, I am respectful towards everyone, believe that the glass is always more than half full, and profoundly appreciative of the social and economic value of cultural diversity. Some Accomplishments: 1.) As Scoutmaster, supported our troop committee in producing over 40 Eagle Scouts. 2.) Served three years as President of the White Center Chamber of Commerce (near Seattle). 3.) Granted a Top Secret security clearance by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and on one of the first technical assistance teams to the former Soviet Union after its collapse. 5.) Participated in agricultural trade delegation to Japan that assisted in opening Japan to American rice. 6.) Assessed economic development projects along the Afghan border in Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Pakistan. 7.) Helped lead the creation of the Candy Mountain Hiking Preserve in Washington.
