I'm a registered patent attorney and intellectual property lawyer with a strong focus on providing my clients with practical, real world advice and patent strategy to advance the their business goals. I've built and managed worldwide patent portfolios for my clients and have an extensive knowledge of the patent laws that affect the value and lifecycles of these portfolios, especially US, European and Latin American national patent laws and WIPO (PCT) practice. I have a demonstrated expertise in creation and management of high value global Intellectual Property portfolios as wells as experience in litigation, pre-litigation counseling, acquisitions. Because I have worked in both a corporate environment and as outside counsel, I am particularly skilled at understanding and meeting the needs of in house attorneys as they try to meet the needs of their internal clients. My expertise includes: • Drafted over 250 patent applications in a diverse range of fields: consumer and personal care products, regulated and OTC medical devices, polymers, probiotics, chemistry, biotechnology, and medicine. • Prosecuted patent applications through national patent offices, including USPTO, European Patent Office, Latin American national offices, and WIPO. • Created and tailored global product line-specific patenting strategy to convert innovations into high value, long-lived patent portfolios to optimize market exclusivity. • Proactively collaborated with cross-border business units at each phase of product development to identify and capture patentable innovation. • Devised and implemented worldwide patent filing strategies for individual product lines to maximize value of portfolio and create ‘real life’ commercial exclusivities. Specialties: There's a tension between patents (which are territorial) and the marketplace (which is global) - I advise clients on how to use the variety national patent laws (and often the regulatory schemes for pharma products) to build a portfolio having real commercial value with the least resources. I have prepared guidelines for an "uniform international patent application" that address the various idiosyncrasies of the national patent laws and permits the least use of resources per application.
