About Jonathan Katz
My professional interests are plaintiff's medical malpractice work and business litigation. Even good doctors sometimes hurt people badly. The medical profession and the insurance industry have built an enormous barrier between injury and just compensation. It takes a combination of legal skills, medical knowledge and compassion to get injured people over that barrier. I genuinely enjoy both the medical science and the hard, high-stakes litigation against committed adversaries. I know that at the end of a successful case I have helped an injured person bridge the financial gap caused by the medical error. This is very satisfying. My business litigation practice typically involves representation of owners of closely held companies, often in business dissolutions. They often ask, "My partner has gone off the wall, can you help me?" Answering that question effectively involves gathering diverse knowledge: what the business does, and what the client does for the business; what the balance sheets, income statements and projections look like; what is the corporate governance structure and how does that interface with the controlling business organization statute; what is the evidence of bad behavior or wrongdoing. Early on I ask, "What is the goal line? Where do you want to come out?" Then we have to get there, in as straight and cost-effective a line as possible, doing the best to maximize the client's profit. At the end we close, solve the client's problem and enable him to go on to more productive ventures. I am lucky because I have terrific colleagues who support the work I do.
