my professional bio in a nutshell: as some may know, i graduated from the us air force academy in 1967. after military service, i attended the university of santa clara law school (law review articles editor). after graduating magna cum laude (jd, 1973), i passed the california bar exam, and began working as a depurty district attorney for the santa clara county district attorney's office. i tried 70 criminal cases to jury verdict during that time. i also handled hundreds of adult and juvenile trials, hearings and motions, and seved as a supervising attorney. after 4 plus years in the das office, i set up my private law practice in 1978. my practice included a variety of criminal. juvenile, and civil cases (including family law, child custidy and personal injury cases). over time, i devoted a substantial portion of my practice to juvenile dependency and delinquency cases, published sections in legal practice books in that area, and taught a juvenile law course for several years at scu. in the 1970's and 1980's i also tried complex criminal cases including homicides, sexual assault cases, and white collar cases in state and federal court. of course, i have handled, and do handle, many other types of cases including duis, regulatory offenses, fraud cases, firearms cases, computer crime, and domestic violence cases. in the 1990's, i took on several death penalty cases, two of which were tried to jury verdicts. one trial was 16 months in duration (reputedly, the longest in county history). in 2013, i was selected by the national trial lawyers as one of the top 100 trial lawyers and was invited to join the assocuation in 2014. i am currently a member of that association, and also the county and american bar associations, and the california public defenders association. i have remained a california state bar board certified specialist in criminal law since 1994. i continue to enjoy practicing law emphasizing criminal and juvenile cases.
