About Frederick Raab
Dr. Fred Raab is Senior Advisor to the Directorate of the LIGO Laboratory, which is operated for the U.S. National Science Foundation by Caltech and MIT. He grew up in a New York City immigrant family and his early work experiences included making pocketbooks in the garment district, driving a Checker Cab in Manhattan and tending everything, from the incinerator to the Fifth Avenue Door, of a fashionable co-op apartment building. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics in 1980 at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. As a Research Scientist at the University of Washington until 1988, he worked to develop high-precision experiments to look for symmetry violations that might herald new physics. He moved to the California Institute of Technology as Assistant Professor of Physics, where he co-authored the LIGO construction proposal. He was appointed Head of LIGO Hanford Observatory in 1995 and moved with his family to Richland, Washington to hire the staff, outfit the new observatory and begin operations. Starting in 2011, he began traveling frequently to India to help colleagues there develop the LIGO-India Project. In 2016, as Associate Director for Observatory Operations, he assumed responsibility for coordinating and growing operations of the LIGO Global Network, composed of LIGO Hanford Observatory and LIGO Livingston Observatory in the USA and the future LIGO Aundha Observatory in India, now under construction. He retired from full-time duties in 2023, but continues working to advance LIGO's goals in science and education.
