About Denise Backhouse

Denise E. Backhouse is a Shareholder and eDiscovery Counsel at Littler Mendelson, P.C. Her practice focuses on litigating the eDiscovery aspects of complex cases including class and collective actions and trade secrets theft matters, leveraging her significant international experience to help clients with cross-border investigations and discovery. Her responsibilities include advising on and conducting all phases of discovery, providing clients with cost-saving, leading-edge technology solutions. She has engaged in eDiscovery motion practice in multiple jurisdictions and has worked on discovery responses to the EEOC, SEC, FINRA, DOJ, and state attorneys general. Denise is an elected member of the American Law Institute (ALI). and a member of the ALI Consultative Group for Restatement 4th, Foreign Relations Law. She is a Founding Member and serves on the Board of Directors of the International Data Law Association, which holds the annual meeting--International Data Law Forum (IDLF)--in Europe. She also serves on the Working Group Series Leadership Council of The Sedona Conference®, is a former member of the Steering Committee of Sedona's Working Group on International Electronic Information Management, Discovery and Disclosure (WG6), and is involved in Sedona Working Groups on Electronic Document Retention and Production (WG1) and Data Security and Privacy Liability (WG11). Denise is a member of the International Council of InfoGov ANZ. She is Founding Director and Advisory Board Member of the Cardozo Data Law Initiative (CDLI), Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, Yeshiva University, where she has served as an Adjunct Professor and Guest Lecturer. She has served as Chair of the American Bar Association Cross-Border Discovery Institute. Denise is also a member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals and a Certified Information Privacy Professional/Europe (CIPP/E). Denise is one of a select group of lawyers in the world ranked for eDiscovery and Information Governance by Chambers & Partners® Global and USA, and Who’s Who Legal®: Litigation. Denise is a frequent author, speaker, and guest lecturer on eDiscovery and data protection issues, including such topics as cross-border discovery; data protection, security, and privacy; developing trends; technology-assisted discovery processes; and privilege and ethics in eDiscovery.
