About Brian Yates

I’ve spent the last 25 years building, acquiring, and monetizing intellectual property at scale. I have been recognized as a member of the IAM Strategy 300 – World’s Leading IP Strategists every year since its inception, reflecting sustained leadership in the commercialization and deployment of intellectual property as a financial and strategic asset. I was the Founder & CEO of iPEL, Inc., an intellectual property investment platform backed by $200M in capital. I led the platform end-to-end — sourcing and underwriting assets, structuring acquisitions and divestitures, managing counterparties, and overseeing portfolio strategy — culminating in a successful exit within eight years. Earlier in my career, I founded Prognosis IP, a venture and operating platform that has created 40+ technology companies, each built around exclusive patent rights and continues to operate today. Working closely with inventors and operating companies, I have licensed technology assets to 1,000+ companies worldwide, including the majority of the world’s leading technology firms. This work emphasized disciplined execution across deal structuring, valuation, enforcement strategy, and long-term portfolio management. I began my career as a California attorney after graduating from Loyola Law School, spending a decade at top law firms advising technology companies on intellectual property matters. That foundation still shapes how I operate today: analytically, transaction-first, and outcome-driven. I’m most effective in environments where capital, complexity, and incentives intersect — situations that require discretion, independent judgment, and the ability to structure asymmetric outcomes rather than chase volume.
