About Peter Hitson
I am an attorney, legal project management, practice management, and legal operations executive with more than 25 years of experience across law firms, insurance, and financial services. I specialize in improving how legal services are scoped, priced, managed, and delivered, with a focus on predictability, profitability, and client value. As Director of Legal Project & Practice Management at Carlton Fields, I lead the firm’s Legal Project Management function and support practice leadership, attorneys, and clients on matter planning, budgeting, pricing, and revenue assurance. I provide hands-on support for the development and management of hundreds of matter budgets annually and work closely with lawyers and clients on creative alternative fee arrangements that balance risk, value, and profitability. Previously, as Director of Legal Process Innovation at Wilson Elser, I founded and led a firmwide Legal Project Management and process improvement program, designing and delivering LPM training to more than 1,000 attorneys and professionals and leading client-facing initiatives to improve efficiency, cycle time, and service delivery. Earlier in my career at The Hartford, I held senior leadership roles overseeing litigation management, legal spend, panel counsel programs, legal analytics, and quality audit functions—experience that continues to inform my approach to pricing discipline, vendor management, and financial governance. I began my career as a trial attorney, serving as first chair in approximately 50 jury and non-jury matters. I bring practical experience with Lean and Six Sigma disciplines, legal technology, and data-driven decision-making, and I am deeply focused on helping law firms deliver legal services in ways that are commercially sound, operationally disciplined, and responsive to client expectations.
