About Brian McGiverin
For more than seventeen years, my work has focused on expanding access to justice for people who are least likely to receive meaningful legal representation.I began my career supporting legal aid programs at the State Bar of Texas before spending five years at the Texas Civil Rights Project litigating federal civil rights cases involving prison and jail conditions. During that time, I helped develop Cole v. Collier, recruiting and interviewing elderly and disabled incarcerated plaintiffs in litigation that ultimately resulted in permanent air conditioning and enforceable heat protections at the Wallace Pack Unit.Alongside my civil rights work, I have maintained a longstanding commitment to representing low-wage workers through wage theft and employment matters in partnership with Workers Defense Project.In 2017, I founded the Austin Community Law Center to serve people who routinely fall through the gaps of traditional legal aid because of income, immigration status, or limited organizational capacity. Since then, I have built and supervised a multidisciplinary legal team, developed systems for litigation management and attorney training, and represented clients across employment, housing, family, consumer, probate, and civil litigation.My supervisory work includes mentoring attorneys and paralegals, litigation strategy, discovery, hearing preparation, quality assurance, and developing organizational systems that allow teams to consistently provide high-quality legal representation. More recently, I have become deeply interested in using artificial intelligence and workflow automation to improve legal practice while preserving thoughtful, client-centered advocacy
