About Spencer Kontnik
Spencer Kontnik is a founding partner of Kontnik | Cohen and a leading civil rights litigator in Colorado, with national recognition for his advocacy on behalf of individuals with disabilities. In 2024, he was appointed by Governor Jared Polis to serve on a task force to rewrite the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act. He has also drafted legislation, testified before the Colorado State Legislature, and helped advance laws protecting individuals from discrimination based on age, race, national origin, color, sex, sexual orientation, and disability. Mr. Kontnik represents clients across all stages of litigation, including before the Supreme Court of the United States, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, the Colorado Court of Appeals, the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado, and in numerous state and administrative forums. He has tried multiple jury trials, bench trials, injunction hearings, and arbitrations, securing six- and seven-figure verdicts and settlements. He is a trial-focused attorney who believes the strongest results are achieved through courtroom advocacy. He is known for taking on complex, high-impact cases. In 2024, he became one of the only attorneys in the country to secure preliminary injunctive relief against a state supreme court for discrimination against disabled bar exam applicants. In 2021, he received the Access to Justice Award from the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association for his work in a significant disability discrimination case involving a long-term care facility. In addition to litigation, Mr. Kontnik regularly consults, trains, and educates on civil rights issues. He has lectured at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law and the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School and has presented numerous CLEs and professional trainings for organizations including the Colorado Bar Association and the Faculty of Federal Advocates. He is a founding member of the Colorado Disability Bar Association and has served on multiple nonprofit boards. Mr. Kontnik’s competitive drive began early as an All-American swimmer and continued through law school, where he was a leader of the National Trial Team and recipient of the Director’s Award. Before co-founding his firm, he practiced at a prominent defense firm and served as trial counsel for Chipotle in high-stakes litigation—experience he now leverages to his clients’ advantage.
