About Margaret Johnson
Professor Johnson’s current research examines the intersection of law, policy, and menstruation. She examines how individuals who menstruate are subject to structural and intersectional forms of oppression. Her forthcoming article, Menstrual Justice Post-Dobbs, in the Wisconsin Law Review explores menstruation regulation in the areas of abortion, disability, work, and school discrimination. In addition, Johnson’s research examines how lawyering on behalf of clients involves narrative theory, critical reflection, and normative theory. Johnson’s articles have been published in the Wisconsin Law Review, U.C. Davis Law Review, Harvard Journal of Law & Gender, and Cardozo Law Review, among others. She is co-author of the book Lawyers, Clients & Narrative: A Framework for Law Students and Practitioners (2d ed. 2023). Her research has been relied upon and cited by courts, media, and other scholars. Johnson was a Fulbright U.S. Scholar at University Technology Sydney, Australia researching comparative law and policy relating to menstruation. She has been a Visiting Professor of Law at New York University Law School, American University Washington College of Law, and Georgetown University Law School. Prior to joining the UBalt faculty, Johnson taught at the Washington College of Law; was an employment discrimination litigator, with a special focus on sexual harassment law, at the D.C. firms of Terris, Pravlik & Wagner, Kalijarvi, Chuzi & Newman and the Washington Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights; was a Georgetown Women's Law and Public Policy Fellow; and clerked for the Hon. Hector M. Laffitte in the United States District Court, District of Puerto Rico. As Associate Dean for Experiential Education, Johnson oversaw UBalt's Clinical Law Program. Johnson directs the Bronfein Family Law Clinic, where students represent clients in litigation and systemic advocacy relating to family law and reproductive justice issues. She also teaches Family Law, Property Law, and Special Topics in Applied Feminism and is co-director of the Center on Applied Feminism, which applies the insights of feminist legal theory to legal practice and policy.
