There is abundant research showing that intact families result in a myriad of benefits: economic growth, less child poverty, higher child achievement, and better child and adult emotional health. As a divorce attorney, people come to see me to discuss the prospect of divorce. Having practiced in court for over 10 years and hearing a lot of divorce stories, I know how important it is for spouses to hear the benefits that marriage offers. It is also important for them to hear that marriage is a difficult struggle as it is that marriage is a gift, beautiful and rewarding beyond measure. They must also hear that divorce is often financially disastrous and always emotionally devastating to the family - especially children including teens and adults. So of course I work to help families stay strong and faithful to the commitment of marriage and family. Yet, within that work, at times, I am part of their civil divorce. When part of that process, I encourage spouses to look outside the courtroom for solutions. Why? Because out of court processes help spouses better reflect more deeply on the what, why and how they are going to divorce taking into consideration not only their own needs but their spouse's and children's needs. This also allows my role to include helping the spouses find answers that work for the family as a whole. While not all divorces can go this route and I will be the first to tell you that, most of them can and should. Divorce is generally not good for us because marriage is the real good. This is truth. However, domestic violence, hardness of heart, emotional dysfunction, uncompromising behaviors, adultery, selfishness, and a lack of love, to name a few, may move us toward divorce.
