She also spent five years as a public defender in Riverside County, handling numerous cases and representing clients in dozens of jury trials. Her academic background includes a Juris Doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law in 2003, where she received the Best Moot Court Brief award, a Dorothy M. Williams Fellowship, and a Gray, Cary, Ames and Frye Scholarship. She earned her BA with honors from UC Berkeley in 1996.
