About Betty Nordwind
Under her dynamic leadership, the Harriett Buhai Center for Family Law evolved into a legal aid powerhouse, serving low-income members and residents of Los Angeles County. Hired in 1987, Betty has overseen the Buhai Center’s growth from an office of 4 persons and less than 35 volunteers to a strong community institution of over 20 staff members and 300+ volunteers. Constantly in motion and thinking outside of the box, Nordwind has initiated pioneering legal services programs to meet the needs of a wide variety of vulnerable persons including incarcerated mothers, women veterans, low-income fathers, community college students and domestic violence survivors. “It’s her passion. Betty can get fired up about injustice and get the rest of us fired up too,” said Ana Storey of the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles.
