About Hincapie

For over two decades, I’ve dedicated my life to advancing the rights and dignity of immigrants and building a more just, inclusive democracy. As Executive Director of the National Immigration Law Center and the NILC Immigrant Justice Fund, I led legal and policy strategies that shaped national debates, protected millions, and built power for immigrant communities. Today, as a Visiting Scholar at Cornell Law School, I’m focused on the next frontier: reimagining immigration as a catalyst for belonging and democratic renewal — at a moment when democracy itself is being tested. I write and speak widely. I convene leaders across movements to expand what’s possible and connect our struggles for justice. My forthcoming book, Becoming America (Flatiron Books), weaves my personal journey with the history of America’s immigration battles, telling a story of who we are — and who we could become. One of the highlights of my career has been investing in emerging leaders who have not yet had a seat at the table. I’ve had the honor of supporting organizations in formation, such as the California Immigrant Policy Center, United We Dream Network, New Orleans Workers Center for Racial Justice, UndocuBlack Network, the Protecting Immigrant Families (PIF) coalition, and now American Families United. Before joining NILC, I worked for the Legal Aid Society of San Francisco’s Employment Law Center, where I founded the Center’s Immigrant Workers’ Rights Project. I’m also a nerd when it comes to nonprofit management, leadership, and board governance. I’ve served on the American Bar Association’s Commission on Immigration, on the boards of Jobs with Justice and the Center for Law & Social Policy, and as founding Board President of the Indivisible Project. I currently serve on the Board of Trustees of The David and Lucile Packard Foundation and The Management Center.
