About James Trott
For 37 years I have been representing peace officers in various communities throughout Southern California. I have been a panel attorney for PORAC's Legal Defense Fund for over 35 years and counsel for the FOP for more than 20. I have served as General Counsel for the Long Beach Police Officers Association for the past 35 years, as well as General Counsel for the Association of Orange County Deputy Sheriffs. Prior clients have included Los Angeles Police Protective League, Huntington Beach POA, Palm Springs POA, Downey POA, Riverside Sheriffs Assoc. and numerous smaller departments. During that time I have handled thousands of cases, over 450 officer involved shootings and dozens of appeals. Most notably would be : Hankla, v. Long Beach Civil Service Commission, 34 Cal. App. 4th 1216, dealing with an off-duty shooting by a police officer, Barber v Long Beach Civil Service Commission, 45 Cal. App. 4th 652, requiring the judge in a writ proceeding to independently evaluate witness credibility from the lower administrative proceeding. Runyan v. Ellis 40 Cal.App.4th 961, guaranteed appeal rights for disciplined officers under Gov’t Code 3304(b). Gritchen v. Collier 254 F.3d 807, This was major victory at the time over the ACLU which affirmed Civil Code §47.5 allowing peace officers to sue for defamation over false complaints filed by citizens. Long Beach Police Officers Association v. City of Long Beaach (L.A. Times). 59 Cal 4th 59, Dealt with the disclosure of peace officer names to the press following an officer involved shooting.
